Teaching the True Blue Crew
A crew member’s journey from the classroom to Culver’sMarie Arnold comes from a family of educators. In fact, both her father and grandfather worked as eighth grade science teachers while she was growing up.
Following in their footsteps, Marie studied education in college and participated in an internship where she was able to use her degree and demonstrate her teaching expertise in a real-life setting. Before embarking on her teaching journey, Marie had been a team member at her local Culver’s.
Marie and her father were regulars at their local Culver’s, and once Marie was old enough to apply, her dad encouraged her to go for it. Since Marie was looking for something that could accommodate her full plate of extracurricular activities, joining the True Blue Crew part-time seemed like the perfect fit.
“The biggest thing that drew me to Culver’s was the flexible schedule and the atmosphere,” Marie explained. “You could tell the team members wanted to be there and cared about the job and the guests.”
With both a teaching degree and Culver’s experience under her belt, Marie had a decision to make following her college graduation – to dive into a full-time teaching position or rejoin the team at Culver’s.
“Every school has its own chemistry, similar to restaurants, but without knowing what that would look like it was hard to walk away,” Marie explained. “I knew we had something special in how we take care of each other and our guests.”
So, Marie chose to take her teaching knowledge back to the blue booths, where she knew she could continue to make a difference for her fellow team members and the restaurant’s loyal guests.
Since becoming a general manager at the restaurant in Harrisonville, Missouri, Marie has been able to apply her education degree in more ways than one. Whether it’s catering to each of her crew member’s individual learning styles or passing along invaluable life skills to those around her, it’s safe to say Marie’s found her fit.
“I love to see how each person changes throughout their time with you,” Marie explained, “The changes in how social they are with their coworkers, the changes in confidence in what they are doing, or simply the changes in how they talk to others.”
Looking toward the future, Marie is seeing blue. True Blue, that is.
“My life without being a part of the True Blue Crew, I wouldn’t recognize,” Marie said.
As a tenured member of the Culver’s team, Marie has a great deal of wisdom to share with newer crew members still getting their bearings. She explained that not limiting herself or her abilities has allowed her to become the best team member she could be.
“My advice would be never tell yourself you can’t,” Marie shared. “There are so many doors at Culver’s you can open by simply having an open mind.”
What started out as an after-school job became a thriving career for Marie. She was able to take what she had learned outside of Culver’s into the four walls of her restaurant to help make it the best it can be.
Taking a different path than the one she had originally planned for herself led her to greatness, and we’re excited to see how leaders like Marie continue to usher in the best of the best at Culver’s restaurants all over the country.
